How Smartee SA helps

When you sleep, your muscles relax and your lower jaw and tongue can fall backwards, narrowing the airway at the back of your throat. As air passes through the narrower space, the soft tissues vibrate, which causes the sound of snoring. Smartee SA holds your lower jaw slightly forward, which helps keep the airway more open while you sleep.

Is Smartee SA right for you?

Smartee SA is for adults whose main concern is snoring, and for some adults who have already been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea. We’ll check your teeth, gums and jaw at your consultation to make sure it’s suitable. If it isn’t, we’ll talk you through other options.

It may suit you if:

  • you snore regularly or loudly
  • your partner’s sleep is disturbed by your snoring
  • you’ve been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea and find CPAP hard to use
  • you’d like to straighten slightly crooked front teeth at the same time (SA Plus)

Please see your GP first if you:

  • stop breathing or choke during sleep
  • wake up gasping
  • feel very sleepy during the day, especially when driving

These can be signs of sleep apnoea, which needs a medical assessment and diagnosis. Smartee SA does not replace advice from your doctor.

Quick answers to your questions

Will Smartee SA stop my snoring?

Smartee SA can help reduce snoring for many people by holding the lower jaw forward and helping keep the airway more open. How well it works varies from person to person, and we’ll review your progress with you after you start wearing it.

It may help some adults with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, but only once a doctor or sleep clinic has diagnosed it. If you have signs of sleep apnoea, such as choking or gasping at night or feeling very sleepy during the day, please see your GP first.

Most people take a few nights to get used to wearing it. Your jaw may feel slightly stiff in the morning at first, and this usually eases within a short time of taking the appliance out.

Some people notice temporary jaw tenderness or that their bite feels slightly different in the morning. We’ll check your teeth and jaw at your reviews, so let us know if anything feels uncomfortable.

Yes, if your front teeth are slightly crooked or spaced, the SA Plus version combines clear aligners worn during the day with the snoring appliance at night. We’ll let you know at your consultation whether this is suitable for you.

Both work by holding the lower jaw forward during sleep. Smartee SA is made from thin, clear trays that cover your teeth, while Somnowell is made from a slim metal alloy. We’ll help you decide which suits you better at your consultation.

Rinse it each morning and clean it gently with a soft brush and lukewarm water, avoiding hot water. Store it in its case when you’re not wearing it, and bring it with you to your review appointments.
